One Four Challenge – December Week 4

This is it!  Week 4 of our December One Four Challenge, hosted by Robyn Gosby at Captivate Me.  This is our final editing for the month.  I am going all out with the processing, and taking you for a tail spin!  As this is the final edit for December, I have included a poll at the end for you to vote for your favourite interpretation.

Week 4 Processing: Tail Spin

A distinctive trait of the white terns is the aerobatics they engage in during breeding season.  Courtship involves elaborate aerial displays in which the male flies up to 500 m high at speed, followed by the female. The pair then glides and zigzags downwards before “strutting” together on the ground with tails raised and wings dropped.  The Tail Spin interpretation is my way of capturing their glorious flying display, and always with the beautiful colours of the lagoon at Elizabeth Reef as a backdrop.

Tail-Spin-FeatureHere are the details of the processing:

  • Started from the Week 3 Tail Feathers image;
  • Used the Free Transform tool to shrink the image by one quarter;
  • Created 4 separate duplicate layers and rotated the tail by 90° each time so the tail feathers fan out;
  • Applied a Diagonal Gradient, selecting a deep indigo to aqua graduation.

  1. This is creative Chris it really reminds me of them flying together. My vote however went with No 1 , which I loved. Have a great Chrissy on board and Bon Voyage, smooth sailing. Love Sue

  2. Chris, this is a great way to use those gorgeous tail feathers 🙂 I loved last week’s interpretation as well, so unique but when I saw them all together…week 2 made me smile the most. Great edits, especially for someone out at sea! I am impressed. Happiest of holidays to you!

  3. Sorry I missed weeks 2&3 Chris. I like the last combination of last week and week 4…however, Week 1, ‘flying with companions’ is my favourite. Would love to have the software and skill to create that. Have a Merry Christmas and a Safe and Prosperous New Year.

  4. Very clever adaptations all of them but my fav. went to week 2 the watercolour. Have a safe and peaceful trip.

    • Hi Ben – thank you for your kind comments and for voting . I liked the whole process for December. It was fun to explore and come up with different approaches.

  5. Great interpretation this week as well! It’s a tough choice between this one and week 3’s, but I think I like week 3 more.

  6. Very creative Chris! This is such a good exercise to get you familiar with your software’s capabilities! You kept all your modifications quite different from each other, and altho of course I was drawn to the water color, nevertheless I voted for week 3.
